Somehow @TelenorNorge managed to not set up
our internet access we ordered (and got confirmed) 3 weeks ago, it just stopped
working today. No expecting to wait 49 minutes in the queue...

I think one of the misconceptions #newwork/#futureofwork brought us is that it's
companies who have to change. Too few realize that it's not about adapting work
to people but invest more in uncovering mismatches and including people in the
decision around those mismatches.

I'm really excited to be mentoring 4 teams (of 50) from
@apcrams as part of a three months @code_door and
@IBMSkillsBuild bootcamp that teaches students how software can be used to
tackle important problems. They will be focusing on natural disasters. This is
going to be amazing!

We got online again today! Because the apartment changed its owner Telenor (the
telco) needed to wait for the municipality to switch over the fiber connection's
ownership to us. Because the city owns the physical infrastructure ...

@petkasp Thanks! This was a good example where
you can split the problem in two smaller ones: parsing the group form entries
(parseGroupList) and then collecting the answers in a form (collectAnswers),
using the samples provided in the day's description. Then the solution combines
those.

@maaretp The source data needs to be available
fully, because the source never knows how other services use that data. So some
services might need to maintain a verbatim copy, others only subsets.

#smartvan now has a proper dashboard web app which shows the current temperature
and the historical measures. Next up, connecting the Victron Energy battery
monitor.

@EmmaBostian Your neutral stance here is
ignoring the impact comments like this have on content creators. It diminishes
the effort they put into creating something valuable for a professional audience
and reduces it to an aesthetically pleasing performance for the audience.

I am mentoring students and I made a README for my office hour every week. I ask
them for 4 things every week, because I think these are very important for
them
:

  1. note progress
  2. get clarity on goals
  3. identify where you struggle
  4. say thank you

Here is the long version:

README: Coaching Office Hours

Each student should provide an individual small status update every week:

  1. Describe one interesting thing you learned in the past week.
  2. Upload one screenshot of your week's work progress.
  3. Describe one thing you struggle with.

Each team should provide a written status update every week in Teams:

  1. Describe the goals you were working towards this week and the progress you
    made towards them.
  2. Describe the blockers you encounter.
  3. Describe what you plan to work on next week.

The first ASUS Radeon RX 6800 XT ROG Strix LC OC arrived today in #Norway and
was sold within a minute or so ... for 11990 NOK (~1131 EUR), which is roughly
more than twice what the card is worth relative to the RX 6800 XT MSRP and
performance. #pc2021

@alesroubicek I gave up after a while
because I have dependencies which do not play well with esbuild's module loader
... some I could work around, but this is too much hassle to first get them to a
pure "browserified" state ... e.g. aws-sdk, cognito, ...

@spazierendenken That would surprise me. IMAP/SMTP is a standard for
reading/sending mails, but offers no way to control mail server filters/actions.
That's always something provider/server specific. It's normal that you have to
configure this outside of Outlook.

I'm impressed with #Trondheim for quickly following mask rules in public spaces:
they are now mandatory, and everyone puts it on in shops, shopping areas and
buses. No big deal here.

Replying to @ste5eu

@ste5eu Well, I don't think it will pay for itself
(6000 NOK), because electricity is cheap in Norway, so the energy savings have
to be considered from an ecological point of view. It reduces water usage as
well. And it increases convenience.

Dear Frontend Developers, don't get fooled by some random dude.

There is an entire career to be made on building excellent frontends and it
includes very demanding topics like usability, color theory, typography,
motion/animation, accessibility, layout, screen design, ...

localisation, which a backend developer never will have to worry about. And I am
eternally grateful for every Frontend developer I've worked with who looked at
this challenges and was like, "Yep, let's do it!" because this does not spark
joy for me.

Some people are just grumpy asshats who will diminish something just because
it's something they can't wrap their simple minds around.

The secret for any career in software is: following what you are curious about
will guide you towards becoming a great engineer.

Replying to @maaretp

@maaretp I guess because in most organizations as
a developer you cannot hire more people. For me the article is clear that
developers have a lot of autonomy within their team to work on bottlenecks
(optimize for consistent flow), while management (the people who can invest
cash) can

Replying to @maaretp

@maaretp I guess that's one of the points
@mpoppendieck makes in this article: it
needs an agile (or elastic) organisation for this to work properly, teams
optimize within their bounds and the organisation scales by providing the right
amount of teams.
