I kid you not, "Building a smart trash can" is my go-to example for #cellularIoT
solutions that are enabled by the #nRF9160 and were not feasible a few years
ago. https://blog.golioth.io/iot-trashcan-monitor-a-golioth-reference-design/

@GoogleCloudTech Let's have a coffee if
you want, I have 5 years experience integrating #nRF9160's with various cloud
providers. Happy to share!
Well now getting it connected to CrealityCloud is a challenge... Maybe
@CrealityCloud should add a
@NordicTweets #nRF9160 to allow printers to
connect out of the box for that.
#CellularIoT revenue last year was ~3%, it's cute. But this is going to grow
rapidly; after all Nordic invested USD$100M+ into this new product (the
#nRF9160), and launched it in 2018. It takes a while for hardware products to
reach production maturity, but it's starting now.
Need to update my slides for tomorrow, because we now have awesome beginner
friendly content for getting started with #cellularIoT on the
@NordicTweets #nRF9160:
- a whitepaper (which I co-authored):
https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/nwp_044/WP/nwp_044/intro.html - an online course:
https://twitter.com/NordicTweets/status/1508795965033132033
I've also found then very straightforward to get up and running for testing
firmware on the @NordicTweets #nrf9160. I
use Ykush Yepkit https://www.yepkit.com/products/ykush for power-cycling the
devices between runs.
I'm all here to support the pet tech market! 🌩️🐕 Check out our free and
open-source #asset_tracker_v2 to get started with your product using

Today I played around with @golioth_iot MQTT
API, and it's very straightforward to start sending in data. The have storage
that represent a digital twin, but also historical data, so it's a great backend
option for mostly offline #cellularIoT devices like the #nRF9160.
The @SODAQ AIR is powered by a
@NordicTweets #nRF9160 and with your help
will create a global network of air quality sensors, giving more data to policy
makers and city planners. https://twitter.com/SODAQ/status/1460558789032169472
Adding the shield with MikroBus, Qwiic, and Grove connectors to the
@NordicTweets #nrf9160 is ingenious, because
it simplifies experimenting with external sensors and other hardware. So many
are available already on https://www.mikroe.com/click and

Tracking at 120 km/h on the German Autobahn. No problem for the
@NordicTweets #nrf9160 using
@1NCE_IoT #nbiot.
Great research by @cnkCorner et al. on protocol
stacks for #IoT (CoAP/DTLS, OSCORE, and NDN). It focuses on protected
request-response transactions, which is not exactly what I see on the #nRF9160
happening mostly, but this is super relevant for my work!

Our @NordicTweets summer students have been
busy working on integrating the #nRF9160 DK with external hardware (specifically
a finger print reader) and out of that came the need to write a UART device
driver for @ZephyrIoT. Read more in Halvor's
blog post:
https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/nordic/nrf-connect-sdk-guides/b/peripherals/posts/writing-device-drivers-for-uart-peripherals
Want to add some color ✨ to your
@NordicTweets #nRF9160 DK? Our summer
student @elboart has managed to connect a TFT
displays and in this blog post she walks you through the process:
https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/nordic/nrf-connect-sdk-guides/b/peripherals/posts/lvgl-on-a-tft-lcd-display-with-the-nrf9160-dk
... No surprise: it was not as straightforward as expected ...
I took a few days but this is some progress from the summer students project:
getting a display connected to the
@NordicTweets #nRF9160 produce nice
graphics! The student will publish a blog post about that, soon...
Works with the #nRF9160, at least that's what it says on the box.

Great chat by @jaredwolff and
@virgilvox about the #nRF9160 feather, and how
@ZephyrIoT simplifies building even complex
embedded projects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ku27o6LMCug
The #nRF9160 modem firmware 1.3.0 has been released, and I am personally excited
about one new feature: device side key generation using the %KEYGEN AT command:
https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/ref_at_commands/REF/at_commands/security/keygen_set.html
Now, your device's private key is never accessible outside the device.
Taking the GPS on the #nRF9160 DK for a spin. With A-GPS enabled it took just 5
seconds to get a fix. Nice!
.@sparkfun collaborated with
@jaredwolff, took his #nRF9160 feather, added
USB-C, a regular JTag header, 4 MB of flash, and a splash of 🟥 and out comes
the nRF9160 Thing Plus (not to be mistaken with the Thingy:91):

Pretty cool tech that wasn't possible before:
@EdgeImpulse and
@institute_irnas partnered up to create
powerline monitoring using the @NordicTweets
#nRF9160. The IzoElektro RAM-1 can detect faults on powerlines and prevent
catastrophes like wildfires. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8sg8jjY0mY
@miskaknapek
@katzentracker Don't know about that ... we
didn't pick it for the market size, but for the constraints cats put on a
tracker, which highlights the features of the #nRF9160.
Very often the #nRF9160 is paired with a BLE chip, like the #nRF52840, which is
also powerful.
In this blog post, my colleague Anders Storrø explains how to offload BLE tasks
to the 52 and only notify the 91 if something relevant has happened.

The #nRF9160 Feather version 2 is available for purchase! It now includes a
3-axis Accelerometer by ST (which works out of the box with
@ZephyrIoT and
@NordicTweets nRF Connect SDK). Available
for $99 on https://www.jaredwolff.com/store/nrf9160-feather/
This is an important companion to our #nRF9160: the #PPK2 enables you to

The good thing about working on building continuous delivery of embedded
firmware is my growing understanding of how to automate interfacing with the
#nrf9160.
That's why @bifravst now has a single CLI
command, which flashes firmware and credentials:
https://github.com/bifravst/aws/commit/49dffb395281c6cfff7a1990e4d239edfa07692c#diff-9127646e0e3c577bee853d3ddb236afb6936b4d32592c2889467c40334efd3a7R106
Pretty important point that Kristian Sæther is making in his
@NordicTweets webinar on how the #nRF9160
enables #cellularIoT asset tracking: sending data is a magnitude more power
expensive compared to computing on the device. Put more logic on the device!

I'm literally using a fork (6 pronged) to program a #nRF9160. It's the worst...
I'm building my own smart campervan and yesterday I figured out how to read
temperature beacons using the #nRF9160 DK:

@NordicTweets The price right now ($109.99
on @groupgetscom) is for a very low batch
size (around 100 kits). This does not at all reflect what a device would cost
when going production volume. The costs for the #nRF9160 SIP are around US$20
for 1 unit, but that goes down significantly.
Look what I caught! A @NordicTweets #nRF9160
feather in its natural habitat: outdoors!
Oh, a #mikrobus feather board with the
@NordicTweets #nRF9160 - the first one I
believe! That's cool because this form factor offer a lot of plug&play

This is such an amazing success for the
@theairbolt team:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/airbolt/the-airbolt-gps/description
They raised more than AU$1M for their

It's connecting and send data to AWS cloud! Pretty nice and reliable on the
#nRF9160. Cloud connectivity (MQTT+TLS) with the EspruinoWifi reaches it's
memory limit, so there it was not so straight forward.
With a hint from colleagues that I need to learn about overlays I managed to
reimplement the temperature controlled relay in
@ZephyrIoT using
@NordicTweets #nRF9160. Building is pretty
painless, because if my own Docker image for our SDK.

Pretty slick package promised by @theairbolt:
built with the @NordicTweets #nRF9160 it's a
tiny GPS tracker which sends location data via LTE-m/NB-IoT and has many cool
additional features and just weighs 21 grams with 12 month battery life!

I find connected concrete from @Converge_io
fascinating: https://converge.io/concretedna/ There are many challenges in
putting sensors in concrete on a construction site: they need to be robust,
long-standing, small... Could be a great application for the
@NordicTweets #nrf9160.
You can offload sending to gateways to do the energy intensive cellular
communication (like explained in the paper below) ... or build devices that
itself do not consumer much power, e.g. with the
@NordicTweets #nRF9160 ... #cellulariot

This is such a great form factor for the
@NordicTweets #nRF9160:
https://groupgets.com/campaigns/814-nrf9160-feather ... looking forward to get
my hands on this feather board by @jaredwolff
to make it work with @bifravst. $99 + shipping,

Tests are done here in #Trondheim 🇳🇴, and I did not expect the regular SIM to
work with our #nrf9160, just was curious.
You can run tests for yourself:

Just in: the latest version of @bifravst now
shows how to read the environment sensor data on the #nRF9160 and the #Thingy91
and also how to visualize it on a SPA: https://github.com/bifravst
@orless From the #nrf9160, which has GPS, and if
this cell has not previously been visited by a device, I query
@UnwiredLabs and
@rxnetworks.
It's pretty cool to see the thing I made the other day being used all around the
globe today.
Come by the @NordicTweets booth

cool things you can build with our #nrf9160 DKs!
In case you need to visualize the signal strength of
@NordicTweets #cellulariot chip #nrf9160 you
might like this configurable #react component, which has logic to represent DBM

The design files for our custom cat tracker board based on the
@NordicTweets #nrf9160 are up:

components on PCBs which are much smaller than a grain of rice.
That small box thing is an active antenna attached to the
@NordicTweets #nrf9160 DK. It speeds up the
time to GPS fix tremendously and allows to get a fix even in problematic
locations like here, close to a wall. Now I no longer need to go outside to
develop the Cat Tracker. 🐈📍
Now meeting @LobaroHH at their office and look
what I see: their evaluation board with
@NordicTweets #nrf9160 Cool thing: they put
two mikroBUS headers on it which gives them the ability to plug-in 800+
readymade shields.
Testing with the #nrf9160 outdoors:
Got some cool swag today @NordicTweets 😁.
